The northernmost expanse of California is rich in lakes, mountains, evergreens, manzanita, and wildlife. It is as much a paradise, as it is marred by natural and man-made disasters, creating a unique dichotomy.  The music chosen reflects the joy and mystery of the Northstate: piano trios by Germaine Tailleferre, Johannes Brahms and a commissioned work by local composerJulian Dürr. Oliver Moore: Magic of Chopin

April 12, 2024 at 7:30pm

Doors open at 7

Pilgrim Congregation Church

2850 Foothill Blvd. Redding, CA 96001

Oliver Moore, dramatic young pianist and frequent PAS performer will present "Magic of Chopin" with a display of forms such as Impromptu, Scherzo, Nocturne, Mazurka, Ballade, Waltz, Etude and Sonata. Oliver currently studies with Garrick Ohlsson at the San Francisco Conservatory.  Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) revolutionized the possibilities of the piano. Born in Poland, Chopin assimilated the folk music of his homeland as well as the music of masters such as J.S. Bach, Mozart, Italian opera composers, and salon composers. In 1830, he would leave Poland, never to return due to Russian oppression (after his death he would be buried in Paris, with his heart returned to Warsaw). Composer Robert Schumann described Chopin’s music as containing “cannons buried in flowers.” On the surface, his music displays great refinement, beauty, and charm, but underneath can be found deep passion and revolutionary fervor.

Ian Scarfe Presents: Travels with Chopin

Pianist Ian Scarfe, founder and director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, makes a rare North-State appearance as a soloist. This program will take the audience on a musical journey, exploring the great works and influences of the stellar Romantic composer Frederic Chopin. Selections will include Barcarolle, Bolero, and selected Preludes, as well as other works by J.S. Bach, Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, and more. The musical adventures will take us from Chopin's Polish roots to his many years spent living in Paris, to his vacation-gone-wrong in Mallorca, and his vacation-that-never-was in Venice.

Scarfe is a prodigious performer, appearing in more than 100 concerts each year across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Aside from his dedicated work with the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival in bringing classical chamber music to rural North State communities, Scarfe also brings music to people in dozens of senior residences across the world, and younger audiences with his highly successful series of house concerts. He lives in San Francisco, where he studied and currently teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Stadler Trio Strides the Centuries

On November 10, the Stadler Trio will present an eclectic program of trioand duo music by composers ranging from Beethoven to Arvo Pärt. Cynthia and Tom Stauffer (piano and cello), with Bruce Belton (clarinet), will play selections including a lyrical sonata for clarinet and piano by British composer James Rae: Sonata in G minor, written for clarinet virtuoso James Campbell in 2014.

Tom and Cynthia will perform the Rhapsody for Cello and Piano by Hungarian composer Rezsõ Sugár, a pupil of Zoltán Kodály at the Budapest Academy of Music.

The trio will take on Beethoven’s popular Opus 11 Trio composed in 1797, one of a series of early chamber works, many with woodwind instruments because of their popularity and novelty at the time.

Bruce and Tom will interpret “Ludus Minor,” a duo for clarinet and cello by Paul Hindemith. This short five-movement duet for clarinet and cello comprising three fugues and two interludes was written to be played by Hindemith and his wife, an amateur cellist. The manuscript has no expression or dynamic markings, so all interpretations are open to the performers.

The trio will perform Arvo Pärt's Mozart Adagio, composed in 1992 in memory of Oleg Kagan, one of Russia's leading violinists. The program will end with a delightful trio by Italian film composer Nino Rota.

The Waterbury Aria Group will present Scenes of Passion, a program of songs and arias of great emotion. Mezzo soprano Gwen Rooker will sing Robert Schumann's song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben, which takes us from the first joy of love and marriage to the grief of loss. In the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson set to music in selections from Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, sung by baritone Henry Patterson, we feel the awakening of beauty itself and gaze in awe at the infinite shining heavens. In aria selections from operas of Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini, sung by Patterson, Rooker, and soprano Rebeca Abinante, we run the gamut from love to rejection, and from humor to jealousy and deceit.  Robert Waterbury is Artistic Director, with Dr. Elizabeth Waterbury coach/accompanist.

PAS Presents: Soul Punch Rocks Us

Soul Punch Rocks Us:  By popular demand, after our "raucous" show by this 7-man band in January, Soul Punch returns for a summer fling. It's easy—bring your dancing shoes and your love of soul music.

Soul Punch is a collective and determined effort to bring a new era of Groove and Funk music to Northern California. When multiple Redding musicians moved back to town after many years living in various musical Meccas, they found themselves without a local funk scene. So, they started it themselves.

While at its core Soul Punch is a modern Party Band, the undertones of this band harken back to the Funk/Soul and Jazz bands of the past. Staying true to the Funk genre, you will hear deep grooves, blistering solos, and dense harmonies. If you like 60's, 70's and modern day groove bands, you will definitely like what Soul Punch has to offer.
