Sheine Nechome [pronounced “Shayna Neshama”] means beautiful soul in Yiddish. This ensemble is the sole northstate Klezmer performance group. Traditional Klezmer music stems from the old Jewish settlements of the late 1800s in eastern and central Europe, Yiddish theater favorites from the early 1900s, Ashkenazi classics, and contemporary pieces in the Klezmer style.

Much of Klezmer, being dance-oriented, was originally played at weddings and other celebrations. With the addition of lyrical theater pieces, you can hear that the music gives cultural insight into Ashkenazi Jewish community and family life in those days and embodies both humor and heart. As many early Klezmer players were traveling minstrels, you may hear musical influences from neighboring geographical areas beyond eastern and central Europe.

Sheine Nechome was founded by Helena Gelfor in 2023 to bring to the North State a genre of music that she grew up with and performed extensively before moving to Redding in 2020.

Ireland is a wonderful place full of friendship, beauty, and art. The Irish tradition of music is from ancient times and peoples who had a simple, almost primal, relationship with life. There are tunes for dancing, storytelling, and even for admiring the landscape! In this program, Nathan and Alisha Townley will share this simple beauty from across the sea by performing on their instruments with a genuine Irish “accent”. We will have a mixture of old and new. Some songs will be well over 1000 years old, while some will have been written by the Townley's in the past year. All of the music, however new, harkens back to that timeless Irish sound and is played on instruments you would find if you were in Ireland yourself!

Students of late Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert Bowman (CSU Chico) will honor his vast impact on our communities. Pianists will play works he taught them, from Bach to Rachmaninoff, as well as several duos with violin or cello.

Pianist Ian Scarfe, founder and director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, makes a rare North-State appearance as a soloist. This program will take the audience on a musical journey, exploring the great works and influences of the stellar Romantic composer Frederic Chopin. Selections will include Barcarolle, Bolero, and selected Preludes, as well as other works by J.S. Bach, Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, and more. The musical adventures will take us from Chopin's Polish roots to his many years spent living in Paris, to his vacation-gone-wrong in Mallorca, and his vacation-that-never-was in Venice.

Scarfe is a prodigious performer, appearing in more than 100 concerts each year across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Aside from his dedicated work with the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival in bringing classical chamber music to rural North State communities, Scarfe also brings music to people in dozens of senior residences across the world, and younger audiences with his highly successful series of house concerts. He lives in San Francisco, where he studied and currently teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
